What Walmart announced

Walmart announced three pieces that let customers shop at Walmart and Sam's Club through AI agents (Walmart). Today an agent signs in with the customer's own account, so its purchases are mixed in with the customer's.

  • Agent Profiles, launching within the next month: each agent gets its own profile inside the customer's account, with its purchases listed separately. Approval is required for every purchase by default, or customers can set a spending limit such as $50, $100 or $200.
  • Walmart Agent Gateway: instead of clicking through a website built for people, agents shop via MCP. It starts as an invite-only beta for companies and developers.
  • Terms for agents: they never receive payment-card details, cannot change payment methods and may access only what the task needs. Agents that break the rules get blocked.

The gateway can also help an agent find a customer's usual items without sharing their broader purchase history. If a customer always buys the same bread, the agent gets that, not the full list. Walmart says agents see the same prices as humans, and returns apply even if an agent doesn't act as intended.

Why it matters

It is the first major retailer to write down what an agent may do with a customer's money. Its main rival has gone the other way: per TechCrunch, Amazon recently began blocking AI agents (TechCrunch). Walmart instead partners with Meta's Muse agent and integrates with ChatGPT and Gemini.

For developers the model is familiar: a separate identity for the agent, delegated permissions, limits and revocation, much like adding an authorized cardholder. Anyone building agentic shopping or payments can borrow the pattern of granting a narrow, auditable permission instead of the whole account.
