What happened
China's DeepSeek has raised about 100 billion yuan, roughly $15 billion, according to Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter (Bloomberg). The target was raised at least twice, from 50 billion to 80 billion yuan and then to the final figure. Reuters says the round could close in the coming days and that details may still change.
- Largest investors: Tencent and battery maker CATL, both existing shareholders.
- More than 15 investors, including NetEase, IDG Capital, Midea, Boyu Capital and CPE. New backers include GigaDevice, Meituan and Geely.
- Pre-money valuation of about 500 billion yuan per Reuters, or about $74 billion per the WSJ. In June, in its first external round, it was valued at $52 billion.
The numbers
Per the WSJ, founder Liang Wenfeng told investors in September that annualized revenue had reached $1 billion (WSJ), up from $400 million to $500 million reported in July. Most of it comes from API access, with 70 to 80 percent gross margins on its V4 flagship despite undercutting US rivals on price.
The company still relies on NVIDIA chips for its most demanding training runs, but is working with Huawei to move more of that work onto Chinese chips. It has hired state-owned CITIC Securities as an adviser and appointed a new CFO in September.
Why it matters
$15 billion is a lot, yet still an order of magnitude less than OpenAI and Anthropic have each raised. The investor list is telling: Tencent, CATL, Geely and Meituan are key players in China's supply chain, making DeepSeek an increasingly central part of the domestic tech ecosystem.
For developers building on open-weight models this is mostly good news: more money for compute and data centers means DeepSeek's release pace is unlikely to slow. A listing, however, adds revenue pressure, which over time may show up in pricing and in its open release strategy.
