What happened?

On October 23, Google Cloud made an Anthropic-managed deployment option for Claude models generally available (Google Cloud). It sits alongside the existing Google-managed option rather than replacing it. Both deliver the same models on launch day, at the same price and through the same Google Cloud billing.

Models available either way include Claude Fable 5.1, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Opus 5.5.

What's the difference?

  • Anthropic-managed: Anthropic is the data processor, under its own Commercial Terms, running on Google Cloud infrastructure. Claude Platform features are available from day one, including Claude Managed Agents (beta), skills and code execution.
  • What stays the same here: you authenticate with Google Cloud IAM, Cloud Audit Logging keeps running, and spend goes to your existing Google Cloud billing and eligible commitments.
  • Google-managed: Google Cloud is the data processor under existing customer agreements. It comes with VPC Service Controls, customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK) and a choice of data residency in the US, EU or APAC, plus native BigQuery and Model Armor integrations.
  • New Claude Platform features reach the Google-managed option later, once they are integrated into Google's infrastructure.

Why it matters

Until now, Claude on Google Cloud was Google-managed only, so new Anthropic features meant waiting for integration. Teams on GCP can now get them right away while keeping access control and procurement inside Google Cloud.

It complements the recent news that OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud Model Garden. Google Cloud is lining up models from several major labs behind the same IAM and billing.

What to watch

The choice mostly comes down to who processes your data. The announcement lists VPC Service Controls, CMEK and data residency under the Google-managed option, so if you need those, stay there. If you need Managed Agents or other new Claude Platform features right away, the Anthropic-managed option is the faster route. In that case Anthropic's Commercial Terms govern data processing, so have your legal team review them.
