What did GitHub announce?
At GitHub Universe on October 28, Microsoft CoreAI chief Jay Parikh said the goal is no longer more code but completed work: a feature, a bug fix, a security fix (GitHub Blog). The new product lineup is built around that idea.
- Copilot app: an agent-first surface from issue to merge. It also handles specs, design discussions and telemetry analysis, not just code.
- Copilot Fusion: picks a model per task or combines several. GitHub says Fusion Max scores within two points of Opus 5.5 Max on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index at half the cost and 40% less time per task.
- Copilot projects: parallel agent sessions across multiple repos, managed from one place.
- Session continuity: the same cloud agent session can be followed in the GitHub app, VS Code, the CLI and the web.
- Copilot automations: AI workflows in the repo triggered by events or schedules, which propose improvements based on their own outcomes.
- Copilot code review Max: according to GitHub, it posted the highest F1 score on ReviewBench for high-severity issues.
Pricing changes
GitHub Enterprise customers can now use all Copilot features without a separate subscription and pay for the AI credits they consume. This is available through GitHub Sales today, with self-serve coming later. Existing Copilot Business and Enterprise plans can stay as they are.
Infrastructure
To handle agent-driven load, GitHub has added 4 million CPU cores, 160 PB of storage and 50 Tb/s of network capacity this year. The platform is moving to a multi-region Azure deployment, due early next year, and Git's architecture is being rebuilt to decouple storage from compute.
The other release of the day was Octoverse 2026, which reports record commits and pushes as developers increasingly build with agents (Octoverse).
What it means in practice
The credit-based model is a big shift: you pay for usage, not seats. That helps when Copilot use is uneven across a team, but costs can climb quickly without controls. Set budgets and alerts early, before Fusion Max becomes everyone's default.
