What shipped?

On October 28 at Android Dev Summit, Google released Android Studio Rabbit 2 as stable (Android Developers). The headline feature is Bring Your Own Agent (BYOA): through the open Agent Client Protocol (ACP), the IDE can run more than 40 coding agents. Claude Agent, OpenAI Codex, JetBrains Junie and Google Antigravity install from a built-in marketplace, and you can run several at once.

The agents get access to IDE tools such as project structure, symbol resolution, Compose Preview, the emulator and Logcat. In other words, they see more than files; they see what an Android developer uses in the IDE.

Android CLI tuned for agents

For agents running in a terminal or CI, Android CLI is now an official agent plugin for Claude Code, Codex and Antigravity (Google). Some specifics from the announcement:

  • Agents can render Compose previews in the terminal without booting an emulator. In Google's internal tests they finished UI tasks 77% faster with up to three times fewer tokens.
  • LeakCanary is now built into the CLI and the Profiler. In an A/B test with Claude Opus 5.5, fixing memory leaks was nearly twice as fast with about 25% fewer tokens.
  • More than 30 Android Skills feed agents current documentation, for example for Play policy checks or foldable layouts.
  • A new Change Review tool inspects agent-written changes, and the Android Bench 2.0 leaderboard was updated.

Agents inside apps too

On the platform side, ML Kit gets an alpha Agentic API powered by Gemini Nano 4, running on device (The Decoder). The AppFunctions API, now in beta, is an MCP-based tool-calling layer that lets apps expose functions to local or system agents. The new Connected Apps Platform preview links apps to Google Search and the Gemini app via MCP servers. Google says more than 50 partner integrations, including Adobe and Peloton, are already live.

Why it matters

Until now the AI side of Android development mostly meant Gemini. Google now openly accepts that teams will use whatever agent they already have a contract for. If you run Claude Code or Codex, the Android CLI plugin is the first thing to try, because token savings here are real money (Android Developers).
