Replit CEO says it no longer works with Anthropic

Replit CEO Amjad Masad said on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt that the company is no longer working with Anthropic, arguing OpenAI's models are now better, cheaper and a better partner. A person familiar with the partnership says it is still in place.

What Masad said

“I think ChatGPT is better now,” Masad said, adding that on Replit's internal benchmark and its public one, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra consistently do better at building vibe-coded apps from scratch. He said the decision was based on cost, partnership and performance (TechCrunch).

Replit sells a browser-based cloud development platform, and its agent long ran on Claude models, which TechCrunch says helped the company grow revenue significantly. Replit announced a partnership with OpenAI in August, but there had been no sign it was leaving Anthropic.

Conflicting signals

According to TechCrunch, insiders familiar with the Anthropic–Replit relationship rejected Masad's comments, and one said the partnership is still in place. A late-September Replit blog post lists Claude Fable 5 and 5.1 as models running in Replit Agent's production environment, and around the same time a Replit product employee promoted Opus 5.5 on X. TechCrunch has asked Replit for clarification.

Enterprise business is growing

Masad didn't share ARR, but said enterprise contracts were about 2% of revenue last year and about 15% this year, and that more than half of revenue is now B2B. On safety, he said agents need a “habitat”: good orchestration, error recovery, sandboxing, networking, identity and authorisation.

What it means

If Masad is right, one of Anthropic's best-known coding customers has switched to OpenAI. If the insider is right, Replit may be shifting its weight towards OpenAI while still running Anthropic models. Developer platforms increasingly run several models side by side and route between them by cost and task.
