Australian unis roll out ChatGPT Edu with OpenAI
OpenAI’s case study says Australian universities including UNSW, Sydney, La Trobe and Adelaide are rolling out ChatGPT Edu, Codex and responsible-AI frameworks so graduates enter an AI-ready workforce.

What happened?
On November 5, 2026 OpenAI published a case study on how Australian universities are embedding frontier AI tools in teaching and learning (OpenAI). UNSW Sydney, the University of Sydney, La Trobe University and Adelaide University are collaborating with OpenAI so students and staff get ChatGPT Edu, Codex and related agentic tools.
Access alone is not the point. Universities are also writing frameworks for where and how AI can be used in learning and assessment, so students gain practical skill and judgment.
What students want
Pureprofile surveyed more than 1,000 Australian university students for OpenAI between 3–7 August 2026. Students already use AI heavily and want more institutional support.
- 81% use AI several times a week; 33% multiple times a day.
- 28% have already built an AI agent or assistant for study, work or personal life.
- 79% want more chances to use advanced AI on real-world projects.
- 61% say AI skills will be essential in their career; 65% say those skills give a global edge.
University rollouts
UNSW is bringing ChatGPT Edu to more than 80,000 students and staff in stages. Plans include generative AI foundations and Codex in courses, plus hackathons, industry projects, internships and startup networks.
The University of Sydney is rolling out supported ChatGPT Edu access with training and guidance. Full student access is scheduled for Semester 1, 2027 after a trial. It is also launching a $1 million AI Sustainability Research and Innovation Fund.
At La Trobe, all 3,500 staff already have ChatGPT Edu; universal access for its 45,000 students and staff is planned for Q1 2027. Australia’s first Bachelor of AI Engineering (Honours) and first AI MBA welcome cohorts in 2027. Phil Laufenberg was appointed Australia’s first Pro Vice-Chancellor AI and Chief AI Officer.
Adelaide University is among the first higher-ed institutions to use OpenAI Daybreak Blue for authorised defensive security work: vulnerability discovery, secure code review, malware analysis, incident response and patch validation.
Practice and responsible frameworks
In La Trobe’s paramedicine program, ChatGPT generates clinical simulations (ECG, triage). In education, Fletch — a social robot powered by OpenAI models on Azure — helps trainee teachers practice parent conversations. The AI Business Studio aims to give more than 1,000 students practice helping SMEs adopt AI with ChatGPT Edu and Codex by 2028.
UNSW introduced a Can, Can’t, Must assessment framework so educators can permit, ban or require AI use. Sydney pairs its rollout with a responsible AI framework. La Trobe’s library offers free Responsible and Safe AI modules, with AI skills woven into 50 priority first-year subjects for Semester 1, 2027.
Why it matters
This is an institutional ChatGPT Edu / Codex wave, not a new frontier model. Useful pattern for other universities: broad access, clear assessment rules, and hands-on practice (simulations, robots, SME projects) together.
