Google's Universal Cart brings shopping to Gemini

Google is rolling out Universal Cart in the US: one cart across Search, AI Mode and the Gemini app, with price alerts and Google Pay checkout. Gemini's role is limited.

Google started rolling out Universal Cart in the US on October 15. It is a single shopping cart that works across Google Search, AI Mode and the Gemini app, according to Google's announcement.

The idea is simple: save products from different retailers in one place instead of juggling browser tabs, then let Google track them.

What it does

Google lists four things. The cart saves items from multiple stores across its surfaces. It sends alerts on price drops and restocks, built on what Google says are 60+ billion listings in its Shopping Graph. It suggests payment methods and promo codes via Google Wallet. And it offers checkout with Google Pay or hands the items over to the merchant's own cart.

Checkout runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Google names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants as launch partners. The merchant stays the seller of record.

The Gemini catch

Gemini's role is narrower than the headline suggests. Per Google's Gemini Apps help page, you can save items to the cart from Gemini and AI Mode, but these surfaces may be unable to list your cart items in chat, add items directly into the cart, or give order updates.

Google itself frames this as its practical track, separate from the agentic features that act on your behalf. So this is a cart with AI-assisted alerts, not a shopping agent.

Why it matters

This is Google putting Gemini into the commerce funnel through a standard (UCP) rather than a chatbot trick. Cart and order data are saved in Google Wallet, which gives Google a cross-retailer view of purchase intent.

Outlook

The feature is US-only for now; Google has given no EU date. For European readers the more relevant question is when agentic checkout inside Gemini arrives, and under which consumer and data rules.
