What's new
Google announced on October 29 that files generated in Gemini can now be previewed and edited inside the chat (Google). You can expand a file to full screen, type edits directly, highlight text to ask questions or have Gemini refine it. Google's demo shows a table being turned into a graph with a short prompt. Its other example is a PDF study guide generated from uploaded handwritten lecture notes, which you can then refine by hand or by prompt.
Supported formats are PDF, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, LaTeX, Markdown, TXT and code. PDF preview and editing works on web and mobile; everything else is web-only for now.
What you can do with it
- Generate a slide deck, check the layout in chat, then open it in Google Slides or download it as PPTX or PDF.
- Generate trackers, tables and data models and open them directly in Google Sheets.
- Draft PDFs, Docs, LaTeX, Markdown or TXT files, edit them inline and upload them to Drive.
According to the Workspace Updates blog, the feature is available to all users in every language where the Gemini app is available, including Workspace customers (Google Workspace Updates). There is no admin control for it beyond turning the Gemini app on or off, and it is live on Rapid and Scheduled Release domains.
What it means for you
Until now, file generation in Gemini was one-way: it created the file, but fine-tuning meant jumping into Docs or Slides. Quick fixes now stay in the chat, which saves a lot of back-and-forth for drafts and summaries built from notes. For organizations, note that there is no separate admin setting, so the feature appears for everyone who can use the Gemini app.
