What was announced?

OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it is expanding its partnership with Oracle (OpenAI). It works in two directions: Oracle applications and data will be available in ChatGPT, and Oracle is building new products and services with OpenAI models and products. The goal is an "agent-ready enterprise" where people and AI agents work across business applications in one connected environment, with unified sign-in and access governed by each organization's own permissions and approvals.

For context: according to OpenAI, Oracle reported 130,000 active ChatGPT users and more than 95,000 active Codex users. Its recruiting team uses ChatGPT Work for market research that used to take two to four days and now takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Oracle inside ChatGPT

Oracle is developing Oracle AI Workspace, which brings Oracle applications and data into ChatGPT through integrations. Users describe what they need, ChatGPT finds the right information and completes approved business workflows in one place. OpenAI's example: a new finance team member uses ChatGPT to investigate costs, understand purchasing decisions and see what remains before month-end close, drawing on finance, procurement and planning systems.

New Oracle products built on OpenAI

  • Oracle AI Security Mesh: finds and fixes vulnerabilities in applications and infrastructure using OpenAI cyber models. Oracle runs the testing infrastructure within the customer's authorized scope.
  • Oracle AI SMB Bundle: ChatGPT Business, Codex, Oracle applications and recurring OCI credits in one package for small businesses.
  • Oracle App Composer: build apps with Codex and other AI tools, connect them to approved Oracle data and workflows, and share them internally. Oracle handles deployment on OCI with permissions and access controls built in.

Oracle customers in the U.S. can also buy the OpenAI API, Codex and ChatGPT Work through Oracle Marketplace, using existing procurement processes and eligible Oracle Universal Credits.

What to keep in mind

This is more of a direction than a finished product: AI Workspace is still in development, and the announcement gives no availability date or pricing. Marketplace purchasing is U.S. only for now.

Why it matters

For teams on Oracle ERP or OCI, ChatGPT and Codex get access to enterprise data inside the existing permission model, which has been one of the biggest blockers for enterprise agents. App Composer also shows that AI-built internal apps are arriving at the big ERP vendors in a governed form, deployment included.
