What's new
Apple announced on its China newsroom that the first Apple Intelligence features are coming to users in China (Apple). They will be available for testing in the latest iOS developer beta from November 4 and roll out to users in China with iOS 27.3 in December. Support for other platforms will follow after the necessary approvals.
What users in China get
- Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, and for in-person conversations with supported AirPods.
- Writing Tools for rewriting, proofreading and summarizing.
- Visual intelligence through the iPhone camera.
- Clean Up in Photos, Genmoji and natural language search in Photos.
Apple says the features are powered by its own generative models. Through a partnership with Alibaba, Qwen is also built into some experiences: users in China can use it directly in Siri, Writing Tools and visual intelligence, including text and image understanding.
Why it matters
China is one of Apple's largest markets, and Apple Intelligence has been missing there because generative AI services need local approval and a local model partner. According to The Verge, the features were approved in July, and the new AI-powered Siri is not coming to China for now (The Verge). The Qwen integration plays a role similar to the ChatGPT integration elsewhere, with an outside model complementing Apple's own.
