OpenAI doubles Pro Codex limits, adds monthly API credits

🇭🇺 Olvasd el magyarul →

On October 29 OpenAI doubled the Work and Codex allowance on its Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans and canceled a planned cut on Pro 200. A day earlier, another perk went live: Pro and Business subscribers can claim up to $500 a month in API credits.

What changed on limits

According to OpenAI's help center, Pro 100 and Pro 500 now include twice their previous Work and Codex allowance (OpenAI Help). On Pro 200, OpenAI canceled the reduction announced in its September 29 email: subscribers on the lower allowance had it doubled, so every Pro 200 subscriber now gets the same higher limit. The Business release notes say Business Premium also gets more Work and Codex usage (OpenAI Help).

  • New subscriptions start with the updated allowance; existing subscribers get it automatically without waiting for renewal.
  • Plus usage is unchanged.
  • Weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat stay the same on Pro 100 and Pro 500, while the lower Pro 200 weekly limit now matches the higher one.
  • Extended limits for Dots, OpenAI's always-on assistants, stay in place for now and are still metered separately.

The Dots detail comes from an X post by Tibo, the public face of ChatGPT and Codex, as reported by BleepingComputer (BleepingComputer). OpenAI stresses that a doubled allowance does not guarantee twice as many completed tasks. Consumption depends on the model, context size, reasoning, tool use and speed mode. Fast mode burns allowance at 2.5 times the Standard rate, and Ultrafast, available only on Pro 500 for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, at 8 times.

API credits on top of the subscription

Since October 28, eligible Pro and Business subscribers can claim free API credits for an API organization they own (OpenAI Developers). Monthly amounts:

  • Pro 100: $100, Pro 200: $200, Pro 500: $500.
  • Business: $20 per paid Standard seat and $100 per paid Premium seat, capped at $500 per workspace per month.

Requirements: a paid subscription active for at least seven days (trials don't count), the same email on the ChatGPT and API accounts, and ownership on both sides. One subscription links to one API organization. Credits expire at the end of the billing cycle and don't roll over, the first grant is prorated, and no API payment method is needed.

The credits cover the Responses API, the Agents API including hosted sandbox charges, the Decisions API, the Realtime API, the Images API and built-in tools such as web search and Code Interpreter. They don't cover Codex used through API keys and don't raise ChatGPT or Codex limits. Simon Willison notes that Anthropic offered almost the same deal to Max and Team subscribers earlier this month, so this is also a competitive response.

What it means for you

On Pro 200, the key news is that your allowance stays at the higher level instead of shrinking. On Pro 100 or Pro 500, you get twice the Work and Codex usage for the same price. The API credits let part of your subscription fund small demos, internal agents or prototypes without a separate card. Activate them early, since unused credits expire at the end of each cycle.
