GPT-6.1 Terra: fast, cheap computer use from OpenAI
OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a fast, low-cost model for computer use, visual reasoning and writing. Its API price is half that of GPT-5.6 Terra, and it is available today in ChatGPT Work and Codex.

What was released?
OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra on Monday (OpenAI), the successor to GPT-5.6 Terra. The model targets everyday office work: drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, filling out forms and editing videos. OpenAI says it strikes a new balance of speed, capability and cost.
What got better?
Computer use: on Agents' Last Exam at medium reasoning effort it scores 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third the cost, and matches GPT-6 Astra at one-tenth the price per token. At max effort, OpenAI says it costs about 9 times less per task than Claude Opus 5.5 and finishes tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
Coding: on Terminal-Bench 4.0 at max effort it solves 50.3% of tasks, up from GPT-5.6 Terra's 21.5%. For the most complex coding work, OpenAI still recommends GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra.
Factuality: on an internal set of error-inducing prompts, the error rate at low effort fell from 53.6% to 16.7%, and to 4.3% at max effort. It beats its predecessor on MMMU-Pro visual reasoning at every setting and on OSWorld 2.1.
What does it cost?
In the API it is available as gpt-6.1-terra at $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, half the price of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. In ChatGPT Work and Codex it is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, and the same allowance covers more tasks.
What to keep in mind
The model meets the Critical cybersecurity threshold under OpenAI's Preparedness Framework, so it ships with the protections built for GPT-6 Astra. Why it matters: high-volume automation, such as reading invoices and entering them into accounting software, gets much cheaper to run with an agent. All figures are OpenAI's own measurements.
