OpenAI to acquire Pierre, bringing Git tools into Codex
OpenAI is buying Pierre Computer Company, maker of the Trees and Diffs libraries already used in the Codex app and of the Code Storage service.

What happened?
On November 4, OpenAI announced it will acquire Pierre Computer Company (OpenAI). Pierre is behind the Code Storage service and several popular open-source developer tools. Anyone who has browsed files or reviewed a change in the Codex app has already used Pierre's Trees and Diffs libraries. Terms were not disclosed.
What Pierre brings
- Trees: fast navigation across a project's files.
- Diffs: change review, with an Edit mode that lets a reviewer fix a line directly in the diff.
- Highlights: a very fast syntax highlighter that updates as a developer types or an agent streams code.
- Code Storage: an API service that lets apps store code and track its history using Git.
The plan
OpenAI wants to adapt Git workflows to coding agents and make Codex the main place where developers and agents work. The deal follows this week's reveal of Pando, OpenAI's in-house source control backend built for agent-scale work.
Pierre's open-source projects will stay open source and OpenAI will keep contributing to them. Code Storage customers can keep using the service after closing while its features move into Codex. The deal still needs regulatory approval, and until then the two companies remain independent.
Why it matters
The coding agent race is increasingly about the infrastructure around code: source control, review and diffs. OpenAI is taking ownership of the whole chain, from an agent's first branch to deployment. Teams that rely on Pierre's libraries or Code Storage should watch how the roadmap and pricing change as they fold into Codex.
