What happened?

Over Halloween weekend, some Grok Bot subscribers woke up to find their weekly usage limits maxed out, even without using the agent overnight. Some users reported on X that their usage jumped from as low as 50% to 100% (TechCrunch). The Decoder, citing the Telegraph, reports that several users saw their quotas cut in half (The Decoder).

Elon Musk confirmed on Sunday, replying to a user, that this was not a glitch: the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue. He did not say how limits will work going forward.

Background

Grok Bot browses websites, answers emails and logs into accounts on a user's behalf. Its allowance is shared with Grok and the Cursor coding platform. In early October, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell cited 800,000 paying users per week, more than double the previous month. According to SpaceX's filing last month, AI makes up 52% of company income, and the Super Intelligence division turned a $431 million profit.

Why it matters

Agents burn far more tokens than a plain chat, so major providers keep tightening their flat-rate plans. OpenAI will put ChatGPT and Codex on a shared allowance from December, and Anthropic says an agent costs four to 15 times as much as a simple chat. If you build agent workflows on these plans, expect the limits to keep moving.
